Global warming potential (GWP)

A number comparing a refrigerant's climate effect with that of carbon dioxide over a set period (100 years in most rules, 20 in some). The refrigerant rules in both states are written as GWP limits by equipment category.

In plain language: How much warming a pound of the refrigerant causes compared with carbon dioxide.

Jurisdiction: New York's Part 494 uses GWP100 for air conditioning and GWP20 for some refrigeration categories.
