About ieComfort

A controls firm run by people who spent thirty years inside the industry's largest companies, and chose to build open.

ieComfort, llc is a minority-owned smart HVAC, controls and building automation firm in Montclair, New Jersey, founded in 2016 by William H. Harris III. The work is open, multi-vendor building controls and energy modernization for commercial and institutional facilities in New York City, Westchester, Long Island and northern and central New Jersey.

Who we are

The company is young. The experience behind it is not.

Bill Harris founded ieComfort in 2016 after a career that ran from a Johnson Controls service truck to the executive offices of two of the largest HVAC manufacturers. The firm's stated mission is to expand opportunities for growth and engagement in the automation business for minorities. Its first job was a grocery store near where Bill lived.

Today the practice is institutional at its center: universities, city agencies, a senior-care campus and a public library among them, most of them tax-exempt owners who buy through procurement rather than a handshake. The same work is done for commercial owners and property managers, and as install labor for other contractors.

Two things stay constant. The firm works in two regulatory regimes, New York and New Jersey, and treats them as two different businesses. And every piece of the stack it installs is chosen so the owner is not locked in to one vendor.

How the work runs

Verify, engineer, fund, and hand over.

Any owner can enter at any stage. A building that already has a quote starts at engineering; a building nobody can explain starts at verification.

1

Verify

Before anything is specified, find out what the equipment is doing, which points are reliable, what the sequences run, and what the building cannot observe. Missing information is part of the finding.

2

Engineer

Equipment, controls and integration that lower the load and hold the peak down, specified on measured operation rather than an old nameplate.

3

Fund

Utility programs in four territories, state study money, lender financing and procurement, matched to the building and the state it is in. The utility decides eligibility; the application is prepared so that it can.

4

Hand over

Installed and verified are different stages. The sequence is tested against what was approved, alarms are confirmed to reach someone, and what remains unresolved is documented. Continuing monitoring is a separate arrangement, scoped with the owner.

What ieComfort does not do

It does not hold the professional engineer or registered architect signature that two New York City filings require (the Local Law 87 energy efficiency report and the Local Law 97 Article 320 report); those are signed by a licensed partner. It does not guarantee incentive approval; the utility decides. And it does not plug customers into a standing monitoring platform; where monitoring is wanted, it is scoped separately, subject to point availability, network and cybersecurity approval, alarm ownership and commissioning.

Who you would be hiring

Thirty years in HVAC controls, from the truck up.

William H. Harris III began as a field technician in a Johnson Controls truck, about eight years of it. He spent about twelve years at Trane, leaving as Vice President of Education Sales for the United States and Canada. He then ran Daikin Applied New York as General Manager, where he is credited with driving the expansion and adoption of VRF in the New York City market. He founded ieComfort in 2016.

In 2011 he co-authored "Building a Business Case for Going Green" in Facilities Manager, a six-step framework for taking an efficiency project to a board. His parents were educators, and the firm offers educational-environment consulting at a discount as a community service.

"Say what you are going to do, then do what you said."
