Nature of Work


Performs the maintenance and repair work on swimming pool facilities and grounds.

Environmental Factors
Work is primarily performed indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions; exposure to mechanical and electrical hazards, explosives, chemicals, fumes, odors, gases, dust and poor ventilation. Safety equipment and clothing includes gloves, vests, back brace, steel toe boots, glasses and ear plugs.

Physical Factors
Moderately heavy work involving frequent balancing, bending, stooping, climbing, crouching, kneeling and squatting; pushing, pulling and lifting items weighing up to sixty (60) pounds.

Work Situation Factors
Requires shift work, occasional overtime and competing demands. Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity of services. Position is subject to drug testing in accordance with applicable State and Federal regulations and City of Las Cruces policies.

Duties and Responsibilities


  • Performs maintenance and repair work on swimming pool facilities and related mechanical and chemical systems, including electrical and plumbing systems;
  • Monitors and adjusts chemical levels of pool water, including maintenance of chemical testing and injection systems;
  • Operates pumps, filters, chemical injectors, aerator systems and chlorinators, including maintaining written records;
  • Performs and maintains the bottom, sides and surface of the pools and fountains by using a motorized pool vacuum, manual brush and other power equipment;
  • Performs maintenance and repair work on swimming pool deck, pool wall and floor areas, including setting forms, pouring and finishing concrete, and plastering;
  • Answers inquiries and provides information to the public regarding pool hours, activities and events;
  • Performs landscaping, including plant, tree and shrub plantings and pruning; weeds area, uses spray, tools and equipment;
  • Removes or paints over graffiti; cleans and maintains restrooms; empties trash and picks up litter;
  • Delivers garbage cans, chairs, tents, picnic tables and related items to event sites; performs set up, clean up prior to and following the events.

Minimum Qualifications

Equivalent to a High school diploma plus one (1) year of experience in building and facilities maintenance. A combination of education, experience, and training may be applied in accordance with City of Las Cruces policy.

Licenses/Certification(s)

Valid class D driver's license and Certified Pool Operator (CPO), or Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) certification, are required. Position requires an acceptable driving record in accordance with City policy.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

General Knowledge of: Principles, practices, methods and techniques swimming pool maintenance; operation and maintenance of swimming pool mechanical systems, including but not limited to, filtering, chemical injection, pumping, cleaning, electrical, and plumbing systems; motors, pumps, filters, chemical feeders, and related mechanical pool equipment; building trade skills, including but not limited to, methods, materials, tools, and standard practices regarding carpentry, painting, drywall, electrical, plumbing, tiling, concrete and plastering tasks related to installation, maintenance, and repair of buildings and systems; operation of specialty tools and gauges required for monitoring and testing systems, including chemical test kits; Federal (EPA) regulations on handling of hazardous chemicals; Federal (OSHA) regulations and city policies regarding safe work practices.

Ability to: Use hand and power tools and motorized vehicles and equipment; swim; perform basic reading, writing and mathematics; follow written and oral instructions; read and interpret technical and operational manuals, blueprints, and diagrams; operate a motor vehicle; prepare written reports and maintain system maintenance and performance records; communicate effectively with the public and other employees.
